Dr Alaina O'Brien

Alaina started with the Waikato Equine Team in September 2019. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Cellular Biology and went on to complete her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University. Following veterinary school she completed a one-year equine rotating internship at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky where she stayed on as an associate veterinarian thereafter. In an effort to expand her knowledge-base and skillset, she elected to come to New Zealand to locum for a breeding season. After spending time in New Zealand with the WEVC team she elected to make the move long-term.

Alaina’s main interests are equine medicine, reproduction, and neonatology. These interests were nurtured during her time working on stud farms in the horse capital of the world. She also enjoys lameness, diagnostic imaging, and all facets of general practice.

Outside of work Alaina enjoys CrossFit, running, cooking, and spending time with her Red Heeler, ‘Jolene.’
