Equine Veterinarian

The Opportunity:

Ever wanted to travel and explore a new country while still progressing with your career? Ever wanted a bit more time to travel outside of work or to focus on expanding your knowledge?

We have a fully equipped equine hospital in the heart of the thoroughbred breeding, racing and equestrian community of New Zealand. We are well equipped with digital imaging modalities, nuclear scintigraphy, video and dynamic endoscopy, modern theatre and hospital facilities and service many of the top Thoroughbred trainer, studs, and equestrian riders in New Zealand, as well as providing primary care for much loved pleasure horses and ponies.

We are part of the Altano International network of clinics and as such have excellent access to continuing education and learning opportunities for our veterinarians. We have a great team culture and very high expectations of the standards of care that we offer.

New Zealand is an incredible country to live in and explore. We can vouch for that as most of our veterinary team came here from the Northern Hemisphere to work for a year and could never bring themselves to leave! If you love the outdoor lifestyle, be it hiking, water sports, skiing, fishing/hunting or the like then it is hard to beat. Come for a year or come forever!

The Role:

We are expanding our team and have a permanent full-time position available for a motivated Equine Veterinarian.  The position is to provide predominantly first opinion equine veterinary care and additionally to support the care of hospitalised patients out-of-hours. This role varies from the standard working week and is designed to aid us in providing the highest standards of care to our clients both during the week and out-of-hours while also looking after the long-term health and professional sustainability of our veterinarians.

The role equates to working approximately 15 days per month dependent on how the calendar falls. You will work 3 blocks of 5 days (Thursday to Monday inclusive) with the fourth week block off, resulting in a 9 day period off work. Emergency out-of-hours responsibilities will commence on Friday evening and conclude on Monday morning. Over the Saturday and Sunday, the role will be emergency care and routine calls will not be scheduled. There will be an established support structure.

We typically have two veterinarians on-call at weekends with one covering the hospital and the other servicing ambulatory calls. We always have an experienced veterinarian attending foalings, in addition to the on-call veterinarian.

The successful applicant should be confident that they can deal with first opinion emergency cases and make decisions in the majority of cases on their own, but there is a support network and advice available.
